New battery materials business builds on Constantia Flexibles' aluminum expertise and brings qualified pouch cell laminates and cathode foils made in Europe to the market.

Vienna, October 6, 2026

Constantia Flexibles, the third-largest flexible packaging producer globally and a trusted supplier in the Pharma and Consumer markets, is entering the rechargeable battery market with the launch of its battery foil portfolio. Following five years of development and qualification work, the company is bringing European-made pouch cell laminates and cathode foils to market for lithium-ion battery applications. In Europe, the products will be marketed under the brand energon.

While manufacturing a pouch cell laminate is a significant technical achievement, proving its durability in real battery environments is the ultimate test. Long-term resistance to aggressive electrolytes and stability throughout demanding aging cycles are among the most challenging requirements for battery materials. Meeting these requirements has been a key focus of Constantia Flexibles' development, with laminate performance validated through extensive testing in collaboration with leading European research institutions. As a result, Constantia Flexibles is currently the only supplier outside Asia offering commercially available, qualified, and tested pouch cell laminates.

“The battery market is a natural extension of our expertise in advanced aluminum-based materials. By entering this field, we are expanding into a sector with long-term potential while leveraging capabilities that already exist within Constantia Flexibles. energon represents an important step in broadening our business beyond traditional packaging applications,” said Pierre-Henri Bruchon, EVP Pharma of Constantia Flexibles.

Wolfgang Kitzler, EVP Aluminum Division of Constantia Flexibles & Managing Director Constantia Teich, commented: “Over the years, we have built extensive expertise in battery materials and completed demanding qualification processes with leading automotive customers. This know-how now forms the foundation of a portfolio that meets the highest quality expectations while strengthening Europe's manufacturing base for battery materials.”

Building for the next phase of the battery industry

Constantia Flexibles launched its battery materials development program in 2021, applying its aluminum-processing and material science expertise to a new and emerging field. Over the past five years, the company has developed advanced aluminum foil solutions for battery applications, achieving prototype quality in 2024 and industrial-scale production in 2025.

Developed using Constantia Flexibles' existing technology portfolio and in-house expertise, the market entry comes at a time of strategic transformation in the European battery industry. As the sector strengthens its focus on resilient supply chains, regional manufacturing capabilities, and technological differentiation, Constantia Flexibles sees strong long-term demand for advanced battery materials. As a participant in several European research and funding programs, the company contributes to initiatives aimed at enabling local battery cell production and strengthening Europe's battery ecosystem.

Constantia Flexibles entered the market through battery applications for the automotive sector, where qualification requirements are among the most demanding in any industry. Today, several leading European e-mobility manufacturers are among the company's first customers, and the company works closely with their research and development teams to tailor material performance to specific application requirements.

At the same time, the technology extends beyond automotive applications. Battery foils are required across a broad range of sectors, including consumer electronics, aviation, stationary energy storage, and renewable energy infrastructure.

The energon portfolio

To address these applications, Constantia Flexibles has developed a portfolio consisting of pouch cell laminates and cathode foils. At the core of the portfolio is energon P (Pouch Cell Laminate), a precisely engineered combination of aluminum and polymer layers designed to safeguard the battery’s internal chemistry. Its structure delivers the mechanical strength required for deep drawing processes while maintaining stability and sealing performance essential for demanding cell environments. Resistant to moisture and electrolytes and optimized for automated, high-volume production lines, the laminate reflects the precision and reliability that comes with fully European manufacturing. Pouch cells remain essential for applications where lightweight design and format flexibility are critical. energon P is produced at Constantia Patz in Austria.

Complementing the laminate is energon C (Cathode Foil), developed for efficient coating with cathode active material and reliable processability, enabling consistent performance in serial production. With widths extending up to 1,800 millimeters, the foil offers flexibility for a wide range of cell designs and production requirements. The product is based on aluminum sourced and processed in Europe. Production takes place at Constantia Teich, where manufacturing runs on electricity generated from renewable sources. In addition, Low Carbon Aluminum sourced within Europe is available as an option.

Customers may select aluminum with optional ASI certification, depending on their specification needs. Fully aligned with ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 standards, the energon portfolio demonstrates Constantia Flexibles’ focus on technological strength, responsible sourcing, and the continuous enhancement of material performance.

The company has also designed its production setup with flexibility in mind. Existing manufacturing infrastructure can support both battery and packaging applications without requiring additional investment, allowing Constantia Flexibles to respond quickly to changing market demand while maintaining the quality standards established through automotive qualification processes.

Supporting a resilient European supply chain

With energon, Constantia Flexibles is translating decades of aluminum-processing expertise into a new business segment at the center of Europe's electrification efforts. By offering battery materials manufactured in Europe, the company contributes to strengthening regional supply chains and expanding local battery production capabilities. Combined with a flexible production setup and automotive-qualified products, this positions Constantia Flexibles as a long-term partner for the European battery industry.
